Al-Tabaeen School and Mosque Strike: 80–100 Killed — IDF Claims Hamas Command Center

On August 10, 2024, an Israeli strike on the Al-Tabaeen school in eastern Gaza City — whose lower floor was used as a mosque — killed 80–100 people (Palestinian health authority figures), with approximately 350 families sheltering in the building. The IDF claimed Hamas and PIJ were using the school as a command center and reported 31 militants killed including 19 Hamas/PIJ fighters. The Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said its preliminary investigation found no evidence of militants or military equipment at the site; the independent monitor Airwars later assessed at least 70 civilians and at least 7 militants were killed. The incident illustrates the recurring challenge of simultaneous civilian shelter use and claimed Hamas military presence.

At approximately 4:40 a.m., during dawn prayers, on August 10, 2024, Israeli forces struck the Al-Tabaeen school in eastern Gaza City. The school's upper floors were used as a shelter for approximately 350 displaced families. The lower floor functioned as a mosque.

What Was Claimed

Israeli claim

IDF Spokesman Hagari stated that Hamas and PIJ were using the school as a command center. The IDF initially named 19 Hamas and PIJ operatives it said were killed, then named 12 more, for a claimed total of 31. Israeli officials stated that Islamic Jihad commander Ashraf Juda may have been among those targeted.

A CNN weapons expert identified shrapnel consistent with a GBU-39 small-diameter bomb (Boeing-manufactured, from U.S. supply).

Palestinian and human rights organization response

Palestinian health authorities reported 80–100+ killed.

Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor: Its preliminary investigation found no evidence of militants or military equipment at the school, and said three people on the IDF's list had been killed earlier elsewhere and that the list included elderly civilians (a school principal and a former deputy mayor). Al-Haq also contested Israel's claims.

Hamas: Denied fighters were present, stating fighters are under "strict orders not to congregate among civilians." (Note: Hamas has denied military presence at other civilian facilities where the IDF later presented evidence of weapons or tunnels.)

The Unresolved Question

Unlike Al-Ahli, Al-Shifa, and Al-Rantisi — where subsequent investigation or IDF documentation provided evidence supporting or contradicting specific claims — the Al-Tabaeen strike remains disputed at the factual level. The independent conflict monitor Airwars assessed that at least 70 civilians and at least 7 militants were killed — supporting some militant presence but far fewer than the IDF's 31. No judicial or official independent investigation has adjudicated the competing claims.

This is the nature of many individual strikes: the facts are genuinely contested. What is documented, however, is the consistent pattern: (a) Israeli strike occurs; (b) Hamas attributes it to civilian-only target; (c) international condemnation follows; (d) subsequent investigation sometimes, but not always, corroborates IDF evidence of military use.

The Al-Tabaeen strike is included here as a representative example of that contested middle ground.
