Why Words Matter

Every political argument rests on definitions. Before a single fact is disputed, the language of the dispute has already been chosen — and often that choice determines who wins before the argument begins.

George Orwell wrote in 1946 that political language "is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind." Eight decades later, the problem has not diminished. It has accelerated.

This site is built on a simple premise: precise language is not a political preference — it is a precondition for honest discourse. When contested words are left undefined, they become weapons. When speakers use legal terms outside their legal meaning, or historical terms stripped of their history, the conversation cannot be honest — regardless of how many facts are cited.
