Military Police Arrest Reservists Over Suspected Abuse of Palestinian Detainee at Sde Teiman; Protesters Break Into Bases

Military police arrested nine reservists (a tenth later) on suspicion of aggravated sodomy and abuse of a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman detention facility on July 5, 2024. Protesters, including Knesset members, broke into Sde Teiman and the Beit Lid base in response; Netanyahu and President Herzog condemned the break-ins.

The incident (July 5, 2024): According to the indictment later filed, a shackled and blindfolded Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman military detention facility was beaten, kicked, stomped on and tasered for about 15 minutes, and one soldier stabbed him in the buttock near the anus with a sharp object, causing an internal rectal tear. He also suffered seven broken ribs and a punctured lung and required surgery. (Times of Israel; Lawfare)

The arrests (July 29, 2024): Military police detained nine reservists from Force 100, a military police unit guarding high-risk detainees; a tenth was arrested later. Investigators initially suspected aggravated sodomy (equivalent to rape under Israeli law) as well as abuse. (Lawfare; Times of Israel)

The break-ins: The same day, protesters gathered at Sde Teiman and some forced their way in; others later broke into the Beit Lid base, where the reservists were believed to be held for questioning. Knesset members Zvi Sukkot and Heritage Minister Amichay Eliyahu were reported among the crowd outside Sde Teiman. Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Herzog condemned the break-ins. The video (August 6, 2024): Channel 12 aired a leaked clip of security footage from the incident. It later emerged that the Military Advocate General herself had authorized the leak — see the October 2025 entry. (Lawfare)
