“Jews and Israel are the root of all problems; Jews and Israel control the media, banks, and governments.”
This is the oldest living conspiracy theory — versions of it have circulated for over 2,000 years. It has been exposed as fiction, debunked repeatedly, and directly caused the Holocaust. It continues to circulate today in both explicit and coded forms.
The claim: Jewish people — and the State of Israel — secretly control the world's media, financial institutions, governments, and global events. Jewish power is the hidden engine behind most of the world's major problems.
This claim is the oldest continuously operating conspiracy theory in history. Versions of it appear in ancient Greek and Roman texts, medieval Christian libels, early modern European pamphlets, 19th-century political tracts, and 20th-century genocide. Today it circulates through social media, academic anti-Zionism, and mainstream commentary — sometimes explicitly, often in coded language.
Why It's Structurally Impossible
There are approximately 15.7 million Jews in the world — roughly 0.2% of the global population. They are spread across over 100 countries, hold no unified political ideology, speak dozens of languages, and disagree profoundly on religion, politics, and culture.
The claim that this 0.2% secretly controls the other 99.8% — including the governments, economies, and media of countries where Jews have lived as persecuted minorities for centuries — is not a hypothesis that requires refutation. It requires explaining how 0.2% of a population maintains totalizing control while simultaneously being subjected to pogroms, expulsions, and genocide by the populations they supposedly control.
The logical problem is structural: if Jews controlled everything, the Holocaust would not have happened. If Jews control the media, the decades of relentlessly anti-Israel coverage in Western media would not exist. If Jews control American foreign policy, U.S. arms deals with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, and Pakistan would not exist. The theory is falsified by the most basic examination of the historical record.
The Protocols of the Elders of Zion
The foundational modern text for Jewish conspiracy theories is The Protocols of the Elders of Zion — a document purporting to be the minutes of a secret meeting of Jewish leaders planning world domination.
It was fabricated. Specifically:
- It was produced by the Tsarist Russian secret police (Okhrana) around 1902–1903.
- It was largely plagiarized from a French political satire, The Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu (1864), which had nothing to do with Jews.
- It was exposed as a forgery by The Times of London in 1921, in a famous series of articles by correspondent Philip Graves, who identified the plagiarism source paragraph by paragraph.
- It was formally declared a fabrication by Swiss courts in 1935 (later overturned on procedural grounds, but the factual finding stands).
Despite being a proven forgery exposed over a century ago, the Protocols remain in print and in circulation across the Middle East, parts of Asia, and the internet. The Hamas charter (Article 32) directly references the Protocols as authentic.
Modern Forms
The conspiracy operates today in several forms:
"Jewish media control": A small number of Jewish media executives (out of thousands of non-Jewish ones) is cited as evidence of control. This applies the same logic as saying that the presence of Irish-American politicians proves Irish control of the U.S. government. Overrepresentation in an industry (often the result of historical restrictions on other professions) is not control.
"George Soros controls everything": Soros is a real person who funds liberal political causes. His political enemies — from Viktor Orbán to American conservatives to Hamas — have made him the personification of the Jewish world-control conspiracy. Soros is one donor among thousands of major political donors. The intensity of focus on him, to the exclusion of comparably influential non-Jewish donors, has one explanatory variable.
"Israel controls U.S. foreign policy": AIPAC is a lobbying organization, one of hundreds of ethnic and foreign-policy lobbies in Washington. It is effective. It is not uniquely powerful compared to the Saudi, UAE, Turkish, or Chinese lobbying operations. The claim that U.S. Middle East policy is Jewish-controlled ignores the decades of U.S. arms sales to Arab states, the U.S.–Saudi alliance, and U.S. pressure on Israel to accept ceasefires and agreements it did not want.
Anti-Zionism as antisemitism: When anti-Zionist rhetoric attributes to "Zionism" the qualities traditionally attributed to "the Jews" — global control, deception, puppeteering of governments — it is the same conspiracy theory with a new name.
The Function of the Conspiracy Theory
Scapegoating is a documented psychological and social mechanism: a complex problem is given a simple human cause, usually a minority with limited power to fight back. Jews have served this function in Western and Middle Eastern societies for over two millennia.
The theory's persistence is not evidence of its truth — it is evidence of how useful it is. When a society is facing economic collapse, military defeat, plague, or political disorder, identifying a small, visible, historically powerless group as the responsible party is psychologically satisfying and politically convenient. It redirects anger, builds coalitions of resentment, and requires no engagement with actual causes.
Every major genocidal movement of the 20th century — Nazi Germany, Soviet Stalinist anti-cosmopolitanism, Khmer Rouge, Rwandan Hutu Power — has used an analogous structure: identify a small group as the hidden controller, attribute the in-group's suffering to this group, eliminate the group.
This is the structure. Recognizing it is not censorship. It is pattern recognition.
