Palestinian Authority

The interim self-governing body established by the Oslo Accords (1993) to govern parts of the West Bank and Gaza. Currently governs only portions of the West Bank. Led by Fatah since its founding; President Mahmoud Abbas has held office since 2005. Distinct from Hamas, which rejected the PA's authority and governs Gaza separately since 2007. The PA coordinates with Israel on security matters in designated areas of the West Bank. The PA is recognized by most of the international community as the legitimate representative body of the Palestinian people in diplomatic contexts.
