November 13, 2023 Important Media Accountability Hamas Hospital Bombing Claims

Al-Rantisi Children's Hospital: Hamas Command Center and Hostage Evidence Found

Israeli forces raided Al-Rantisi Children's Hospital on November 13, 2023, finding a Hamas command center in the basement, weapons including suicide vests and RPGs, and items the IDF said indicated hostages had been held there (an improvised toilet, women's clothing, rope on a chair); a sheet the IDF called a guard schedule was shown by translators to be a calendar. CNN's headline: "Israel shows alleged Hamas 'armory' under children's hospital in Gaza. Local health officials dismiss the claims."

On November 13, 2023, IDF Shayetet 13 commandos and 401st Armored Brigade forces raided Al-Rantisi Children's Hospital in Gaza City. The basement contained a Hamas command and control center.

What Was Found

Weapons and military equipment:

  • Suicide bomb vests
  • Grenades, AK-47 assault rifles, RPGs, explosive devices
  • Computers and cash

Hostage evidence:

  • An improvised toilet
  • Women's clothing
  • Rope tied to a chair leg
  • A sheet on a wall that the IDF said was a Hamas guard schedule; translations (e.g. France 24's fact-check) showed it was a calendar listing the days of the week under the heading "Operation Al-Aqsa Flood"
  • Items consistent with holding Israeli hostages (the October 7 attackers abducted women and men of various ages)

The IDF said intelligence indicated hostages had been held at the hospital "during a certain period"; no hostages were found there, news agencies could not independently verify the claims, and Gaza health officials said the basement was a shelter for staff and displaced people.

Pre-operation: The hospital had been evacuated as Israeli forces advanced (reported by the Wall Street Journal, November 11, 2023).

Media Coverage

CNN headline — November 14, 2023

Headline: "Israel shows alleged Hamas 'armory' under children's hospital in Gaza. Local health officials dismiss the claims."

The word "alleged" qualified the IDF's evidence. Hamas health officials' dismissal received equal billing in the headline. The structure of the headline — presenting evidence and denial with equal weight — was standard CNN framing for IDF evidence claims throughout the conflict.

Critics compare this framing with initial Al-Ahli headlines that relayed Hamas's casualty claim; given that the IDF's 'guard list' claim here proved to be a calendar, attributing IDF claims as "alleged" was also consistent with standard practice for unverified claims.
