Netanyahu Orders Probe After Leaked Videos Show Soldiers Abusing Palestinian Prisoners

Videos leaked in 2025 showed Israeli soldiers abusing Palestinian detainees. Prime Minister Netanyahu called the leak of the Sde Teiman video perhaps the most severe public-relations attack in Israel's history and demanded an independent investigation of the leak; critics said his focus was on the leak rather than the alleged abuse. The response drew further criticism.

Throughout the Gaza conflict, videos filmed and shared by Israeli soldiers themselves documented abuse of Palestinian detainees — beatings, humiliation, and degrading treatment of prisoners held in military detention facilities. The videos circulated on social media and were reported by Israeli media including Haaretz and the Times of Israel.

In late October 2025, Military Advocate General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi admitted authorizing the 2024 leak of security-camera footage from the Sde Teiman detention facility, which appeared to show reservists assaulting a detainee, and left her post. On November 2, 2025 Prime Minister Netanyahu publicly addressed the leak and called for an independent investigation into it (JNS). The indictment of the reservists (aggravated abuse) was withdrawn in March 2026. Reporting indicated his response focused on the reputational damage caused by the videos becoming public — a framing that drew criticism from human rights organizations and opposition politicians who argued the focus should be the abuse itself, not its publicity.

“Perhaps the most severe public relations attack the State of Israel has experienced since its establishment.”

The IDF opened disciplinary proceedings against soldiers in some documented cases. Critics noted that the proceedings were reactive — triggered by public exposure through leaked videos — rather than reflecting proactive oversight of detention conditions. Human rights organizations, including the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel, had previously submitted documented accounts of abuse that had not resulted in systematic reform.

The treatment of Palestinian detainees has been a documented concern throughout the conflict. The UN and multiple NGOs documented Palestinians being held in degrading conditions, denied legal representation, and abused during interrogation. Israel disputed many individual accounts but acknowledged that misconduct had occurred in some cases.
