Gaza After 700 Days: Scale of Destruction and Death by the Numbers

By September 2025 — approximately 700 days into the conflict — UN agencies, satellite analysis, and independent researchers had documented the scale of destruction in Gaza: about 78% of structures damaged or destroyed (UNOSAT, July 2025), more than 63,000 reported killed according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry, near-universal displacement, and famine conditions.

By September 2025, approximately 700 days after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack that triggered the conflict, independent analysis and UN documentation had assembled a detailed picture of the cumulative destruction in Gaza.

Casualties

The Gaza Health Ministry — which operates under Hamas and whose figures have been the subject of methodological dispute — reported more than 63,000 deaths by the end of August 2025 (Jordan News); its named-list figures continue to be disputed. The UN has used Gaza Health Ministry figures as a baseline while noting their limitations. Separately, the Hamas methodology for counting deaths has been challenged (see: Hamas Death Count entry); early figures included all deaths from any cause. Some researchers have estimated the actual conflict-related death toll could be higher once deaths from disease, malnutrition, and indirect causes are fully counted.

Physical Destruction

UNOSAT — the UN Satellite Centre — analyzed satellite imagery of Gaza and in July 2025 estimated that about 78% of all structures in Gaza (192,812) had been damaged or destroyed, including 102,067 destroyed (UNOSAT); its October 2025 update put the figure at about 81%. The total area of destruction represented a near-complete erasure of the built environment in parts of the territory. Universities, hospitals, mosques, archives, and cultural institutions were among the destroyed structures.

Displacement and Famine

Virtually the entire population of Gaza — approximately 2.1 million people — was displaced at some point during the conflict, often multiple times. Israel says many evacuation orders were issued to move civilians away from combat with Hamas, which fought from civilian areas. On August 22, 2025 the IPC declared famine in Gaza Governorate, using methods Israel and some analysts contested; in December 2025 it said no area remained in famine after the ceasefire and an influx of aid.

Israel reports more than 100,000 aid trucks entered Gaza by September 2025 (its own count; figures are self-reported and contested) and coordinated ceasefire periods for vaccination campaigns. Critics argued that the volume of aid was insufficient relative to the destruction of distribution infrastructure and the restrictions on movement.

Legal Proceedings

By late 2025, multiple international legal proceedings were underway: South Africa's genocide case at the ICJ (provisional measures issued; final ruling pending), ICC arrest warrants for Prime Minister Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Gallant, and investigations by the UN Commission of Inquiry. No final legal determinations had been reached. The ICC Prosecutor applied for warrants for Hamas leaders Sinwar, Deif and Haniyeh in May 2024; after the deaths of Sinwar and Haniyeh those applications were withdrawn, and a warrant for Deif was issued in November 2024 and later terminated after his death was confirmed (ICC).
