“Many of the "journalists" and "medical workers" Israel killed in Gaza were Hamas or Islamic Jihad operatives — the IDF named 170”

Verdict: NEEDS CONTEXT Major Claim

Substantially supported for named individuals. The IDF published 170 names with captured documents; Hamas and Islamic Jihad's own death notices have claimed a number of "journalists" and medical workers as their members; and the Committee to Protect Journalists and the International Federation of Journalists each removed names after those notices. Not every one of the 170 has been independently verified, and the CPJ still counts about 200 journalists and media workers killed in the war.

Where this claim comes from

  • Vivid (@VividProwess) (~297,000 views): "The IDF has released a full list of 170 'journalists' in Gaza who were actually terrorists… They lied about Israel killing 'journalists.'"
  • Andrew Fox: a list of 64 reported journalists "confirmed as combatants."
  • Eylon Levy: Gazans buried as "journalists" remembered on their headstones as "fighters."
  • Salo Aizenberg: thirty Gaza "medical workers" confirmed as Hamas and Islamic Jihad operatives, from the groups' own death notices.
  • Mor Edge Insight: an interrogation video of a Kamal Adwan Hospital employee.
IDF Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin presenting the list (still from the video shared by @VividProwess, Oct 2, 2026).

The evidence

Journalists

  • The IDF list (Oct 2026): 170 names — 118 Hamas military wing, 49 Islamic Jihad; 17 allegedly took part in October 7; some had worked for international outlets. The IDF says its evidence includes the groups' own documents captured in Gaza. (Ynet; JNS)
  • The groups' own death notices: Hamas and Islamic Jihad published obituaries describing some people counted as journalists as their fighters.
  • Press-freedom groups responded: on June 25, 2026 the Committee to Protect Journalists announced a full review of its list and removed 8 names later established to be Hamas or Islamic Jihad combatants (and 12 for other reasons); the International Federation of Journalists reportedly removed 8 as well. (Arab News; Jewish Insider; Algemeiner)

Medical workers

  • Researchers including Salo Aizenberg and Gabriel Epstein have compiled about 30 Gaza health workers named as commanders or operatives in Hamas and Islamic Jihad martyr notices and videos — e.g. Mohammed Al-Kafarna, head of Gaza's Nursing Association and a Kamal Adwan nursing supervisor, shown in a Hamas video as a platoon commander.
  • A UN Commission of Inquiry (May 2026) concluded on reasonable grounds that Hamas's Sahm Unit used the Nasser Medical Complex to interrogate and mistreat civilians, and cited Médecins sans Frontières seeing armed, masked men inside. (A/HRC/62/22)

What is not established

  • All 170. Only some entries have been independently confirmed; researcher Muhammad Shehada, who reviewed the list, calls it sloppy and disputes many entries. (Common Dreams)
  • "They lied about Israel killing journalists." Even after its removals, the CPJ counted about 200 journalists and media workers killed by Israel in the war (as of June 2026); a confirmed militant on a list does not make every other entry false.
  • The medical-worker lists come from pro-Israel researchers and advocacy groups (e.g. AIPAC); the underlying Hamas/PIJ notices are the primary evidence, and their total scale has not been independently audited.

Ratings of the parts of this claim

  • The IDF named 170 "journalists" as Hamas/PIJ operatives — True (the list exists, with documents).
  • Many were in fact members of Hamas or Islamic Jihad — Corroborated for named individuals by the groups' own notices and by press-freedom groups removing names.
  • Dozens of "medical workers" were Hamas/PIJ operatives — Corroborated for named individuals by the groups' own martyr notices; the full count is unaudited.
  • All 170 / "they lied about journalists being killed" — Overstated: not all entries are verified, and many journalists killed were not claimed by any group.

Scale and intent — side by side

October 7 (Hamas): about 770–840 civilians killed in one day. Intent to kill civilians is documented — in Hamas's written orders ("kill as many people as possible"), its fighters' own footage, and its leaders' statements.

Gaza (Israel): civilian deaths in the tens of thousands over two years (the civilian share is disputed, roughly 60% to 83%). Israel's stated aim is to destroy Hamas; warnings and large aid volumes are documented, and several incidents have been acknowledged by the IDF as errors. Intent to kill civilians is alleged, and has not been established by any court.

Both facts matter, and neither cancels the other. Every party's alleged crimes, on one scale: War Crimes Ledger.
