“A leaked memo shows the BBC's Nasser Hospital mass-graves story was completely fabricated — and the BBC knew it”

Verdict: FALSE Important

Not supported. The graves and the bodies in them were real; open-source analysis indicates the graves were dug by Palestinians during the siege, so coverage implying Israel buried the bodies was misleading. But the leaked Prescott memo criticized the BBC's Gaza coverage broadly; no evidence was found that it showed the BBC "knew" the story was fabricated.

Where this claim comes from

Eyal Yakoby (Nov 10, 2025; ~181,000 views), with a Telegraph video: "A leaked memo reveals the BBC's viral mass graves story was completely fabricated — and they knew it. They had proof the graves were dug before Israel's entry by Palestinians, yet ran the lie anyway."

Still from the Telegraph video shared with the claim.

What the record shows

  • The memo is real. Michael Prescott, a former BBC standards adviser, wrote it; it leaked in November 2025 and criticized BBC Arabic's selective coverage, casualty reporting and starvation coverage. (Reuters factbox)
  • The graves were real. Hundreds of bodies were exhumed at Nasser Hospital in April 2024.
  • Coverage implying Israel buried them was misleading. Open-source analysis (GeoConfirmed, Sky News, France 24) indicates the graves were dug by Palestinians during the siege; the IDF said it exhumed and reburied bodies while searching for hostages. How the people died has never been independently established.
  • No evidence was found that the memo showed the BBC "knew" the story was false before publishing.

Ratings of the parts of this claim

  • Coverage implied Israel dug the mass graves, which evidence does not support — Supported.
  • The story was "completely fabricated" — False: the graves and bodies were real.
  • The leaked memo shows the BBC knew — Not supported.

Scale and intent — side by side

October 7 (Hamas): about 770–840 civilians killed in one day. Intent to kill civilians is documented — in Hamas's written orders ("kill as many people as possible"), its fighters' own footage, and its leaders' statements.

Gaza (Israel): civilian deaths in the tens of thousands over two years (the civilian share is disputed, roughly 60% to 83%). Israel's stated aim is to destroy Hamas; warnings and large aid volumes are documented, and several incidents have been acknowledged by the IDF as errors. Intent to kill civilians is alleged, and has not been established by any court.
