“Al-Ahli Hospital: it was a Palestinian rocket, it hit a parking lot, and fewer than 20 died”
Mostly right on cause, wrong on the toll. The evidence supports that a misfired Palestinian rocket caused the October 17, 2023 explosion in the hospital's parking area, not an Israeli strike. But US intelligence estimated 100 to 300 people were killed, likely at the low end — not "fewer than 20" (and not Hamas's 471).
Where this claim comes from
Eyal Yakoby (Jan 11, 2026; ~514,000 views): "Two years ago, Hamas falsely claimed Israel bombed a hospital—'500 killed.' It was a Palestinian rocket, hit a parking lot, and fewer than 20 died."
What the evidence shows
- Cause: a misfired Palestinian rocket, not an Israeli strike — the conclusion of US, UK and French intelligence and of Human Rights Watch. See Israel bombed Al-Ahli hospital.
- Location: the hospital's courtyard/parking area; the main building was not destroyed.
- Toll: US intelligence estimated 100 to 300 killed, "likely at the low end"; the Hamas-run ministry claimed 471. (AFP)
Ratings of the parts of this claim
- Hamas falsely blamed Israel and claimed ~500 dead — True.
- It was a Palestinian rocket that hit the parking lot — Corroborated.
- Fewer than 20 died — False: US intelligence estimated 100–300.
Scale and intent — side by side
October 7 (Hamas): about 770–840 civilians killed in one day. Intent to kill civilians is documented — in Hamas's written orders ("kill as many people as possible"), its fighters' own footage, and its leaders' statements.
Gaza (Israel): civilian deaths in the tens of thousands over two years (the civilian share is disputed, roughly 60% to 83%). Israel's stated aim is to destroy Hamas; warnings and large aid volumes are documented, and several incidents have been acknowledged by the IDF as errors. Intent to kill civilians is alleged, and has not been established by any court.
